2023 Vermentino
100% Vermentino
The long cool 2023 growing season produced some of our raciest white wines. We now have 3 clones of Vermentino which really give this'23 a more serious complexity, depth and structure. As you know, we love how Vermentino performs in Dry Creek, regardless of the vintage. No malo-lactic fermentation to preserve it's live acidity.
Beginning in 2023, we use all of our clones of Vermentino, planted in 2004, 2010, 2017 and 2018. I doubt many if any other winery grows 3 clones of Vermentino. The young vines include a clone from Liguria, which provides more minerality and structure. 2023 was the latest we have ever harvested Vermentino, Sept 28-30, due to the cool weather in August and September. The result is a serious style of Vermentino with racy acidity, just how you and I like it. 620 cases produced

"Prompted by their love of southern European wine, Mick Unti and his father, George, plant mostly Mediterranean varieties on 35 acres when they established Unti in California's Dry Creek Valley in 1997. That includes nearly 4 acres of Vermentino vineyards planted to three clones, one of which comes from Italy's Liguria, where the grape is widely planted. 2023 was the first vintage for which winemaker Jason Valenti used all three, resulting in a lovely mix of almond, pear and citrus zest notes with a jolt of fresh acidity (provided by cool evenings at the wine's source)."

WS review: Offers a lovely mix of Marcona almond, Honeycrisp apple, pear and citrus zest, with hints of tangerine and apricot that are plump and juicy. A jasmine note lingers. Drink now. 620 cases made. From California.—M.W.
